THE men in blue will be on the ball when they take on Tavistock's champions in a charity football match this weekend. Bouncy castles, ice creams, a tombola and auction will complement the charity day of football in Tavistock on Sunday, April 27. The Son-Rise Cup Final will take place at Tavistock AFC ground at Langsford Park and will see the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary team hoping to make a performance sufficient to snatch the Son- Rise Cup for Autism from opponents Tavistock Tyres and Union United — the tyre company, led by Tim Schmid, having joined forces with Francis Jasper's Warriors from the Union Inn. Funds from the main events will go to the Tavistock Youth Café Plus for children with special needs and disabilities in the Tavistock area and proceeds from the auction will go to the Son-Rise playroom used by Paul Lewis, who is autistic. Chairman of the Tavistock Youth Cafe Plus, Cathy Sharp, said The Son-Rise Cup was a great way to promote the group, which meets at the Tavistock Youth Cafe. 'The event will support our efforts in providing these young people with a chance to socialise and have some fun in a safe and relaxed environment,' she said. The senior match for the Devon County FA trophy will kick off at 3pm, followed by the presentation of medals and the cup, but the day will start at 10am with an Under 8s tournament — their final will take place at Langsford Park at 1pm. Entered in the junior tournament are the Tavistock Thistles, Tavistock Town, Ivybridge Town and AFC Plympton. A sponsor has donated a junior Son-Rise cup trophy and a junior player of the match trophy and all those taking part will receive a medal. The Red and Black club will be serving food all day and the bar will be open. A small auction of signed football memorabilia will take place after the main match, including photos of players such as Sir Bobby Charlton and Matt Le Tissier. At 8pm bands from Tavistock Youth Cafe will up the tempo for an evening of fun. The admission fee for adults will be £2 for the afternoon and £2 for the evening.
