TO increase the awareness and understanding of dementia and help towards making Tavistock 'dementia-friendly', the local Rotary Club has teamed up with the library to provide information for those with dementia, their family and carers. In a special section of Tavistock Library, Tavistock Rotary Club has funded books covering many aspects of dementia and what it means for individuals, families and carers. Librarian Helen Cooper said: 'We have just launched this initiative and already we have been surprised by the number of people making enquiries and seeking dementia information. 'We are proud to support this and the work towards making Tavistock more dementia-friendly.' The books funded through Rotary include topics such as: l When your loved one has dementia — a guide for carers. l Dementia — the journey ahead. l The warmth of the heart prevents your body rusting — ageing without getting old. l The 36 hour day — a family guide to caring. l Remembering yesterday, caring today. The chairman of the Tavistock Dementia Action Alliance, Tony Parker, said: 'We are grateful for the continuing support of the Rotary Club and the library in our project. 'The more we can increase awareness and understanding of dementia and the impact it has the more the town can move towards being truly dementia-friendly.' Free training in dementia awareness can be arranged for shops, businesses and social or voluntary clubs and there are leaflets available giving information on how staff can help customers who suffer from dementia.
