Devon 2 League North Tawton 10 Salcombe 14 SALCOMBE immediately showed their potential, penetrating to the Tawton line within the first few minutes. Tawton worked their way back into the Salcombe 22 metre area and the presssure they were able to exert led to Salcombe giving away penalties. Two attempted penalty goals from Tom Davis went wide before his third effort found the mark. The home side were able to establish some dominance in the set forward play, pushing Salcombe off their own scrum ball several times. Some astute kicking by the North Tawton side, making use of the tail wind, allowed Tawton to dominate the game territorially. There were signs of the potential in the Salcombe three-quarter line as they broke through the Tawton defence in the latter stages of the half. However, the margin remained at 3-nil to the home side at half time and North Tawton were to regret not taking greater advantage of the wind as the match progressed. It was Salcombe who finally opened the second half scoring following a looping run from their fly-half Chris Drew to feed a short pass to full-back and captain Nick Pearn coming at pace on the left wing and evading the Tawton cover. The conversion by Drew took Salcombe to 7-3 ahead. Tawton came back immediately with some good driving play. Salcombe lost a player to the sin-bin as the ball was scooped back illegally on the ground during one of the rucks. Tawton were pushing Salcombe back giving the visitors no room to work with, when a break through the middle by Salcombe?s centre Rory Edmunds gave him a try under the posts, converted by Drew, and they moved into a 14-3 lead. A good drive by Tawton forwards took them over the line but the grounding by Lethbridge was not given by the unsighted referee. A second scrum nearly resulted in a push-over try for Adam Hooper as the Tawton pack again dominated the set play. Finally a penalty try was awarded to Tawton as Salcombe infringed once too often in their desperate defence of the line. Paul Fewings converted to move Tawton up to 10 points and there were no further changes in scoring despite both sides? attempts to close out the match in the final frenetic minutes. A last-chance penalty from Salcombe fell short to leave the scores at 14-10.
