A LOCAL resident is going above and beyond to help raise funds for her workplace, due to it being inundated with animals.

Kerry Morwood, 36, from Tavistock, has worked in the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust Sanctuary for ten years. The sanctuary is currently caring for more than 100 cats and kittens, with a waiting list for cats wanting to come in growing every day.

Kerry and her colleague Kelly Beutner have decided to do a wing walk — where you are strapped to the wing of a plane as it flies — to raise money for feeding and care bills.

Kerry said: ‘I have worked with the cats for over five years and every summer is always the same — too many cats and not enough space! I get to see first hand the difference we make and how hard all the staff work to help all the animals in our care.

‘Myself and Kelly decided we wanted to raise some funds for the cattery department as we know feeding and veterinary costs can significantly rise during the summer months. We wanted to do something different and Kelly came up with the idea of wing walking. We decided to go ahead and book the event for September 17 as September and October are usually our busiest homing months. Last year we rehoused 98 cats alone in October and we suspect this year won’t be much different. We have been nicknamed the “feline flyers” at work.’

Carole Bowles, founder of the sanctuary, said: ‘It has been another very busy kitten season which, although started slowly, has now certainly seen us inundated with four legged felines. The staff are really finding themselves stretched to the limit. We know that this time of year if always the worst, but we don’t often find ourselves caring for two litter of puppies as well as over 100 cats at the same time. Cattery staff are changing 214 litter trays every day which really puts it into perspective. Our running costs of food and cat litter are extremely high and many need extra veterinary treatment which is really pushing our resources to the maximum.’

Kerry is hoping that they will be able to raise £1,500 to help with the high numbers of cats and kittens currently at the sanctuary.

Carole added: ‘We are immensely proud of Kerry and Kelly for taking on such an adventure and the funds they raise will really help and make a difference.’

So far over £1,000 has been raised, but the ladies need help reaching their target. To sponsor their efforts visit the website www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/felineflyers
