TWO Tavistock youngsters Siena Critchley and Lily Mitchel, recently braved the rain in Bedford Square to sell their homemade cakes to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti.

The girls, who are Year 4 students at Mount Kelly, swung into action as soon as they heard of the plight of the many thousands of Haitian people and children who had lost their homes to the hurricane.

They decided to bake and sell cakes to raise money to help build new homes.

Using a stand kindly provided by Richard Alias from Sunrise Nursery, Siena and Lily raised £35.31, which they donated to Rotary’s Haiti Disaster Fund.

Accepting the money and presenting the girls with a special Rotary award, Tavistock Rotary Club president Catherine Bailey said: ‘We are so proud of Siena and Lily. The speed of their response and their brilliant idea to bake and sell cakes — which tasted fantastic, by the way — is a lesson for all of us. What’s also great is that they intend to do this all over again before Christmas.’
