A TAVISTOCK woman is appealing for information after callous thieves stole a memorial cross from her late partner’s grave.
Sandy MacDonald is appealing for information on the theft of the marble cross from the grave of her late partner Robin Roberts, who is buried in the Plymouth Road Cemetery. Sandy bought the cross with the metal figure of Jesus on it from a stonemason in France to accompany Robin’s headstone.
She said: ‘I think it is someone grown up who has taken it, not kids. It’s marble and heavy so I don’t think it’d be kids. It came from France and you can’t get anything like here over here, so I’m hoping if anyone sees it they will recognise it and get in touch with the police.
‘When I saw it was gone from the grave I felt terrible. It’s just cruel isn’t it? I couldn’t believe it when I saw someone had stolen it.’
Sandy first saw the cross was missing on Monday, May 23 and after speaking to a gravekeeper, she thinks the cross would have been stolen from Robin’s grave over the weekend of May 21 and 22.
A friend of Sandy shared a photo of the grave and the story on Facebook after hearing the cross had been stolen. The post has been shared over 280 times; Sandy said she is appreciative of the support hopeful that someone may see the photo on social media and recognise the cross.
If you have any information on the whereabouts of the stolen cross, contact Devon and Cornwall Police by email [email protected] or call 101 quoting crime reference number CR/034454/16.
