Tavistock 21

Tiverton 6

TAVISTOCK recorded their second win in a row with this comprehensive win against Tiverton at Sandy Park on Saturday.

Playing against the slope in the first half Tavistock had the better of the play but had to be satisfied with two Richard West penalties to one from Liam Lewis for Tiverton at the break.

Tavistock did however create enough chances in that first period and should have converted at least one of these into tries.

As with all decent performances it all started up front where the forwards got a grip on the game and did not allow Tiverton any scope to create sustained pressure.

Number eight Ed Maslavakis and second rows Andy Shutakaker and Andrew Griffiths for Tavistock all made the hard yards and the front row of skipper Adrian Baker Will Tomkins and Matt Martin kept control of the scrum. Centre Doug Lloyd also had an excellent game punching holes through the middle and also acting as the creator and getting the ball wide. This allowed wingers Danny Luffman and Lee Greatrex to cause Tiverton problems. Luffman in particular was unlucky not to score being hauled down close to the line on a couple of occasions.

Tavistock started the second half with a bang. Adrian Baker created havoc as Tiverton attempted to take the kick-off.

The home side recycled the ball and good hands from Richard West and centres Doug Lloyd and Jamie O'Gallagher worked space for Lee Greatrex to score in the corner.

Soon after Tavistock increased their lead to 13 points. Full back Matt Witcher fielded an aimless Tiverton kick ahead and ran back at the Tiverton defence. Flanker Qwain Lloyd carried on the attack and provided the scoring pass to Jamie O'Gallagher who crossed in the corner.

Tiverton came back with a second penalty from Liam Lewis but some good defence from scrum half David Goodspeed and flanker Will Brown secured the fringes. Richard West at outside half also had a sound defensive game.

As the second half drew to a close Tavistock got their third try. From deep Owain Lloyd started a counter attack and this released replacement winger Callum Harding who outstripped the Tiverton defence as he ran in from 70 metres.

The victory means that Tavistock leapfrog Tiverton in the table and are now third bottom and no longer in the relegation places.
