Devon U15s Sevens festival plate final Tavistock U15s 17 Exeter Chiefs U15s 14 Tavistock U15s ran out winners of the plate competition after an excellent day's rugby in surprisingly good weather. With little previous experience at sevens, the Tavistock side played with increasing confidence throughout the day and all squad members contributed well to the team's success. Tavistock's opening pool match against Kingsbridge proved to be their only defeat of the day at 26-5. This was followed by a comfortable win over Bideford with Tavistock running in nine tries resulting in a score of 55-0. The final pool match against Torquay was therefore to determine which team progressed to the plate semi final. Following a tight first half the result was decided in Tavistock's favour at 29-7 through a strong second half performance.    Tavistock faced Totnes in the semi final and scored the first points with a try from Tom Thursby. The first half ended level, however, as Totnes responded with a try immediately from the restart. Second half tries from Jack Bond, Dan Oner and Elliot Northmore brought the score to 24-5 and took Tavistock through to the plate final against Exeter Chiefs. Tavistock were once again the first to score with a try from Northmore but soon lost the lead as Chiefs converted their first try. A break down the wing and a clever reverse pass from George Rogers enabled Robin Jones to cross the line to retake the lead for Tavistock before the end of the first half. In the second half Tavistock proved to be the better side at retaining possession and keeping the ball alive. After some patient play a gap appeared in the Chiefs' defence for Rollo Whitehouse to make a break for the line. The break was held up under the posts but the ball was quickly recycled and moved wide to Thursby who scored on the wing to extend Tavistock's lead. Chiefs replied with a second try but were unable to prevent a well deserved win by Tavistock. The cup competition was won by a strong Crediton side who beat Ivybridge in the final.
