Tavistock U13s pack not afraid to mix play in tri-rugby matches

Tavistock RFC U13 19 Crediton RFC U13 7 AS a conclusion to the season Tavistock U13s hosted a 'double header' against Crediton and Devonport Services with each team playing each other in three consecutive games. Tavistock began in style by dominating the play and retaining possession in both the pack and through the backs and were encouraged by an early classic breakaway try from Sam Northmore, successfully converted by Chris Swash. The second try was put over the line by Dominic Dewson from a pick and drive on the Crediton line but the trymaker was Jack Cooper who as flanker peeled off a scrum and broke through with a blindside upfield run. Back up support was readily available when he was tackled and a group of forwards recycled the ball on the line until the opening emerged. Crediton responded with a brilliantly executed opportunistic try from a mishandled Tavistock ball in the Tavistock 22. The final try was taken over the line by Jez Massy Birch from a hallmark Tavistock move of the quickly cycled ball across the complete pitch width from a set scrum on the opposite wing. Tavistock RFC U13 0 Devonport Services U13 24 DEVONPORT had done their homework in deciding to use their powerful, heavier and well drilled and heavier pack to keep possession of the ball. Even if to Tavistock's disadvantage, it was a joy to watch their mobile pack moving upfield and recycling the ball through number eight and see a different playing style executed so successfully. The sheer strength advantage of a physically stronger team with honed skills in the pack denied the Tavistock backs of ball which is where their comparative team advantage lies. Devonport went on to run in four unanswered tries. In the second half, Tavistock came out fighting and displayed resilience and tenacity in tackling and follow through to deny Devonport a higher score.
