CRICKET?S Lancaster Cup came to a conclusion on Friday when the final was held at Lewdown where the wicket was firm and the outfield quick. Tavistock batted first and the opening pair of J McGahey and S Johns put on 25 for the first wicket before C Downes bowled Johns for 6. This brought in J Kaminski and he and McGahey put on 79 for the second wicket before McGahey was caught by Scott Gillespie off G Jacobs for 56 which included 6 fours. This left Tavistock on 104 for 2 with 5 overs to go. B Thomas fell for a duck caught by Josh Stacey off M Brock in the 17th over. D Downham (9no) joined Kaminski and they put on 31 for the fourth wicket with Kaminski finishing on 60 not out with 6 fours and 1 six. M Brock was the pick of the Hatherleigh bowlers with 8 runs off his two overs with 1 wicket. The fielding was good but with a big field and a quick surface Tavistock ran well often turning singles into twos. Hatherleigh?s openers looked confortable with 12 off the first 10 balls before 15-year-old G Tidball was tragically run out. Twelve for 1 became 31 for 2 when Bryant (12) was caught by Kaminski off Thomas in the seventh over and then 42 for 3 in the eighth over with Al Gillespie (11) bowled by Simpson. Scott Gillespie (10) and Ryan Davies (20) gave a glimmer of hope but when these departed wickets soon tumbled to leave Hatherleigh on 103 for 9 in the 18th over. Josh Stacey (19) and G Jacobs put on 15 for the last wicket before Stacey was run out in the last over with the score on 118, leaving Tavistock the winners of the 23rd final by 26 runs. B Neal was the pick of the Tavistock bowlers with figures of 3.2 overs 18 runs for 3 wickets. D Downham picked up 2 wickets for 18 runs and all the other bowlers had a wicket apiece. The Lancaster Trophy was presented to Tavistock captain John Rich by Stuart Munday from sponsors Atlas International. Competition chairman John Gauler thanked Atlas International, the umpires Messrs Rawlings and Elliott for their sterling work and host club Lewdown for the use of their facilities. The annual meeting for the 2006 competition was to be held on Wednesday February 8 2006 at Hatherleigh Cricket Club. It is hoped to attract every club in the West Devon Borough to enter the competition. Details are available from secretary Richard Tidball on 01837 811188.
