The final of the Bill Fogerty Trophy Okehampton and district table tennis league took place this week between last year's winners Tavistock A and Okehampton A. Tavistock raced into a 3-0 lead before Tony Howick put Okehampton A on the score sheet with a fine win over Peter Hicks. Tavistock stepped up a gear wining the next five games for a convincing 8-1 win, Fred Phillips and Roger Bowkett scoring fine maximums. In the last group two match in the Pretoria Handicap Cup this week Tavistock B took on Lewdown; in the first doubles Trevor Drew and Cath Smith beat Lorraine Robinson and Richard Cole to put Lewdown one ahead. Pam Hunwicke put Lewdown 2-0 beating Lorraine Robinson in straight sets. Bob Vella pulled one back for Tavistock doing well to beat Trevor Drew. The second doubles was between Bob Vella and Richard Cole against Pam Hunwicke and Cath Smith. Bob and Richard took the first leg 22-20 but Pam and Cath took the next two for a 3-1 lead to Lewdown. Richard Cole did well to win his next singles against Pam Hunwicke. Trevor Drew beat Lorraine in the last singles to give Lewdown a 5-2 win. The last match in Group four was last year's winners Moretonhampstead B at home to North Wyke. Moretonhampstead won the first doubles when Peter Denman and Richard Underhill beat Bruce Freeman and Jill Dilley in a hard fought game in the third leg. Peter Denman beat Jill Dilley again in the third leg to put Moretonhampstead 2-0 in the lead. David Shilston lost the next singles to Bruce Freeman. Jill Dilley and David Scholfield won the next doubles beating David Shilston and Richard Underhill both going to three legs to level at 2-2. David Scholfield beat Richard Underhill in the next singles in the third leg to put North Wyke 3-2 in front. David Shilston beat Jill Dilley to put the scores level at 3-3. In the last singles Peter Denman lost to Bruce Freeman in the third leg, North Wyke winning the match 4-3. Moretonhampstead B went through as group winners with eight points and Okehampton A as runners up with six points.
