TAVISTOCK's Music and Arts Festival, Tavistock Sings! was officially opened by the Duke of Bedford in the Bedford Hotel on Saturday — heralding a ten-day feast of entertainment in the town. During Saturday, Stannary Brass Band entertained the shoppers in Bedford Square, while art lovers could visit the festival exhibitions in the Bedford Hotel, Kelly College and The Wharf. The Ten Tors Orchestra entertained during the festival gala concert in the church on Saturday night and at lunchtime on Sunday, South West Camarata performed in a free concert at Kelly college. During this week, there have been writing workshops, talks and lectures and poetry readings, the showcase Tavistock Sings! concert featuring children from the area and a night of short films. Today (Thursday) the Acoustic Café will be held in The Wharf at 7pm, featuring the cream of artists who have performed at the café previously. Tomorrow (Friday) there will be a poetry workshop at The Wharf at 10.30am, and a festival supper 'A Night at the Opera' at Kelly College. The dawn chorus workshop taking place this Saturday has changed its location. The workshop was due to be held at the Molly Owen Centre but is now being held at Tavistock Parish Rooms from 10am to 12.30pm. Participants can learn the dances, make garlands and create music for the Merrivale Dawn Chorus on May 5. For more information contact Caroline Keane on 01822 610546. During Saturday lunchtime there will be a recital in the Abbey Chapel and up and coming band The Rumble Strips are back in town on Saturday night — the band from Tavistock who really began to make waves on the music circuit last year with an acclaimed performance at Glastonbury. The Rumble Strips, featuring three former Tavistock College students, will perform at the Wharf, supported by Oli N Clive, from 8pm. Tickets are £15 each from the Wharf box office or on the door. The barbecue will be serving food and the bar will be open on the night. Sunday sees lunchtime jazz at The Wharf at noon, festival evensong at the parish church at 6pm and 'Rock On' — a showcase for local bands including Far from Friday, Flick and Indigo Nights — at The Wharf, starting at 7.30pm. Early birds can welcome the dawn on May Day at Merrivale stone circle at 5.15am on Monday, there will be a choral workshop at the parish church at 10.30am and a further lunchtime recital at Abbey Chapel at 12.15pm. The festival finishes with Mozart's Requiem, a showcase of choral singing, in the parish church at 5.30pm. For full festival details go to http://www.tavistockmusic.co.uk">www.tavistockmusic.co.uk
