A CHEQUE for £4,000 was presented to a local charity thanks to funds raised at Tavistock Rotary Club’s successful charity golf day last month.
Having been rained off on the original date in May, the Rotary, Tavistock Golf Club, teams and sponsors rallied round in September to produce a popular day of golf.
As a result, Catherine Bailey, the Rotary Club’s immediate past president, was able to present a cheque for £4,000 to Plymouth and District Leukaemia Fund (PDLF). Since 1988, PDLF has raised more than £1-million to support Derriford Hospital’s Haematology Unit.
Presenting the cheque to Chris Allen of PDLF, Catherine said: ‘Tavistock Rotary is really proud to have worked with PDLF throughout the past year. Last year, we accepted a challenge to raise £10,000 over two years – that’s enough to buy five state-of-the-art chemotherapy pumps for the hospital. We’re now over halfway though and, with this contribution, we have now provided three of the five pumps.’
On the charity golf day, on September 6, 21 teams played in fine, sunny weather and produced some excellent golf.
The winning team members, from the Whitchurch Inn, were presented with a golf bag each, sponsored by the Original Pasty House. Star member of the Whitty team, David Langton produced a splendid round to also win the men’s prize, sponsored by Smokey Joe’s.
Accepting the ladies’ prize, sponsored by Dartmoor Photographic, Val White told the other competitors that she was especially proud to have taken part because she has been treated for a number of years in the Haematology Unit at Derriford.
She amazed her audience when they realised that, not only had she won the overall ladies’ prize and the nearest the pin prize, but she had done it with myeloma and a replacement hip and femur.
Weather permitting, next year’s competition will be held on Thursday, June 14.
