TWO tug-o-war teams from Tavistock are celebrating after winning their categories at the recent Devon Championships at Broadclyst. Tavistock Ladies team beat off tough competition from the only other ladies' team to be crowned winners, which was an excellent result in only their second competition pull. They hope more teams will enter another year, but there are not many ladies' teams in the county. The Tavistock Farmers team, so called after the original men's team merged with the Young Farmers' team, competed in three categories: the 680kg, 640kg and catchweight, and came out the champions in all three. Several of the team members competed in more than one event. Each team pulled against every other team, points being awarded for the best of three pulls. l Pictured with the ladies' team — who also mostly have farming connections — are their coaches, who are also members of the men's team.
