Western Counties
Tavistock 16
Penryn 25
AFTER last Saturday's game TRFC first XV felt unlucky to have come away from the game without at least a losing bonus point (this season teams losing by less than seven points receive a bonus point) as they were within four points of Penryn with less than five minutes remaining.
Even after conceding the try which put them nine points behind, Tavistock still had a chance of the bonus point when they were awarded a penalty; unfortunately Richard Goldsby West was unsuccessful with his kick from a difficult angle.
However, for Tavistock the damage was done in the opening half with the sides reaching half time with Penryn 20-9 in the lead and despite having the advantage of the slop in the second half Tavistock were not quite able to overall their visitors.
Penryn opened the scoring with a try from winger Darren Pellow and kept the pressure on Tavy and this resulted in the home side conceding a number of penalties five of which Dave Pascoe converted.
Tavistock however did not let Penryn have it all their own way in the first half and were successful with three penalty goals from Richard Goldsby West.
The second half saw Tavistock keeping the pressure on Penryn and some immaculate kicking from hand by Goldsby West kept Penryn on the back foot for long periods of the game.
The Tavistock forwards tried battering their way over the line but some notable charges from Andrew Griffiths, Ben Williams and Jake Phillips came to nothing. Tavistock were eventually rewarded for their efforts when Duncan Law playing in the centre carved his way through the defence for a try which Goldsby West converted.
Sensing Penryn were there for the taking Tavistock continued to batter the try line only for some excellent Penryn defence to keep them out. With less than five minutes remaining Penryn eventually broke out of defence and from a messy scrum within the Tavistock 22 Dave Pascoe was able to break and score on the blind side. From the restart Tavistock got back within Penryn territory but could not conjure another score.
n This Saturday Tavistock entertain Truro at Sandy Park in the Western Counties League. Kick-off 3pm.
