TAVISTOCK College's Design and Technology Textiles department, recently selected 15 talented students to help design a community banner.

The 15 students from years seven and eight designed and made a community banner entitled 'Tavistock in Textiles', along with 12 primary school pupils from Tavistock Community Primary School, Whitchurch Community Primary School and St Peter's CE Junior School who contributed to the banner on one of the days.

On the first day of the project, students and pupils visited Tavistock to take photographs of the town's landmarks and then spent the rest of the day learning valuable practical skills such as using Photoshop, transfer paints, paper and embroidery. By the end of the day 100 fabric squares had been individually crafted.

The students also visited Plymouth College of Art and Design to learn how to screen print, and visited well-known textiles artist Sandra Meech for advice on how to compose and sew the banner together.

The project was inspired by the Community Cohesion theme 'Who are we and where do we belong?'. The next stage is for the banner to be put together and displayed in Tavistock before doing a tour of the schools involved.
