MANY residents from Tavistock participated in a vigil in support of Ukraine in Bedford Square last Sunday.
Organised by Tavistock Peace Action Group, residents of all ages, mayor Andy Hutton and town councillors took part to demonstrate solidarity with the Ukraine after Russia’s recent invasion of the country where attacks remain ongoing.
Ginny Davies, Marlene Harris and Elizabeth Knight from the Tavistock Peace Action Group said: ‘We had a meeting this week and we were clear that we wanted to do something to stand in solidarity with the Ukraine. But as a group we also wish to bring attention to numerous wars happening around the world; there are always so many people in need and we are always concerned about the potential for or risk of further wars. As a group, we’ve been in existence since the 1970s and campaigning for peace for over 40 years now.’
Mayor of Tavistock Andy Hutton, who was in attendance with his wife Sue, said: ‘Tavistock is hugely sad and concerned about what’s happening in the Ukraine. Clearly we don’t want a European nor a world war but we wish to show solidarity as individuals and on behalf of the people of Tavistock which why we’re all here today. People from the town have already sent money and so many supplies to aid the humanitarian crisis which is a great way to be involved. I also hope refugees are able to get shelter or accommodation quickly; I know the people of Tavistock would offer them this if necessary.’
Cllr Ursula Mann, who attended the vigil with her family, said: ‘It’s horrific to see the scenes unfolding in the Ukraine right now. They should be allowed their independence from Russia. As a mother, it’s harrowing to see families being literally ripped apart by what is essentially one man’s war. I really hope the Ukranian people prevail in the end.’
