Tavistock College played host last week to the first ever contact rugby sevens tournament for girls in Devon. More than 50 girls took part with U17 teams from Exeter, Plymouth and Tavistock. The day was a great success both for rugby and for the hosts, who had entered two teams in the competition. All games were fiercely contested with no one team running away from the rest in the group games. The tournament started with Eggbuckland against West Exe and was a sign of what was to follow with a try 'fest' first half and some big tackles in the second. The game of the group stage was Tavistock 'U' taking on Tavistock 'O' in an even contest that was won by Tavistock 'O' by seven points to five. Ridgeway's Kim Barber made a clear impression on special guest Plymouth Albion Ladies first team player Megan Higgins — who decided that her performances deserved the player of the tournament trophy. As the group stages came to a close it was obvious that both Tavistock teams were the dominant forces by winning three of their four games. These two teams competed in the final. It started with some massive tackles from the two teams' more senior players — captains, Steph Morgan and Sarah Daymond. It was Tavistock 'U' that broke the deadlock as Tavistock 'O' started to tire after their exploits in the group stages. U's Robynne Honey claimed two tries to ensure she walked away with the tournament's top try scorer trophy, presented by South West England prop, Vee Thompson. As the game came to a close Tavistock 'U' stormed away to win 27 – 5. Event organiser Tristan Forster, who is head of rugby at the college, said: 'Today has been a great success, its been fantastic to see all the girls enjoy the day and it's a real plus having role models such as the ladies from Plymouth Albion that are playing in Premiership Two and gives the young athletes a target to aim for. 'Personally it's a great feeling to have both Tavistock teams in the final and both the college and their friends will be as proud as I am of their achievements.
