Tamar League A division
ON a dismal afternoon of showers interrupted by spells of persistent rain, Tavistock were asked to bat first by Lewdown in a reduced 30 over game.
Early wickets were just reward for some accurate bowling from Lewdown's Williams, Miller and Marais. Despite these losses Tavistock kept the scoreboard well oiled with runs coming at a reasonable rate.
Tavistock's Thomas and Sandhu put together a solid partnership with some nice stroke play to further push the score along. With the fall of Sandhu (25) to Metherell (3-34), Thomas found able support in from Johnny Smith. With the ball now becoming increasingly 'sponge like' Lewdown's Metherell and Marais took full advantage picking up wickets and putting a brake on the Tavistock run rate.
At the close of Tavistock's 30 overs they had put on a respectable 159 for 8, with Thomas still there on an invaluable unbeaten 50.
Tavistock made a bright start with a good spell of bowling resulting in a couple of wickets a piece for Thomas and Will Smith, which put pressure on Lewdown. Lewdown's Summersby however dug in and started to put together a commanding innings. With wickets at the other end falling regularly, it was always going to be a question of who could stay with Summersby long enough for him to do the job for Lewdown. Summersby's controlled 50 saw his team well on track to overhaul Tavistock's total.
Tavistock's plight was not helped by several dropped catches and some undisciplined fielding. The breakthrough came with Summersby (79) eventually falling to Folley (2-28) caught well by Dhanjal with Lewdown only 30 runs behind.
Now with a new spring in their step Tavistock proceeded to press home the initiative with Thomas (4-32) and Poppe (2-2) wrapping things up with a couple more wickets apiece and Lewdown bowled out 29 runs short.
