NORTH Devon Athletic Club is one of the premier track and field clubs in the South West. A well organised and well coached club, their athletes compete at county, regional and national level. So, it was all the more pleasing when, after winning the Devon League for the past few years, they were finally forced into relinquishing that crown to Tavistock after the recent meeting at Braunton.

This years Devon Open Series saw Tavistock athletes having to travel to Braunton twice this season to compete in the four match series. And, it should be remembered that the track at Braunton is the home venue for the North Devon club!

43 members of Tavistock Athletic Club made the journey to Braunton for the Devon Open Series with a good turnout across all age groups. Over the season, Tavistock sent an average of 41 athletes to perform at the meetings held at Braunton (twice), Plymouth and Exeter. And, after an enjoyable day in the sun, Tavistock increased the narrow lead they had at the start of proceedings amassing a huge 3,273 points to win the coveted title. There were some excellent performances on the day from young and old. The full results are available through the club's website. This achievement is vindication for all the hard work put in by the club's athletes and their coaches.

Head junior coach Adam Tofield was delighted saying: 'We set ourselves the target to win this league and it is mission accomplished. Now we will aim to regain the Devon Sportshall League trophy and put out a strong team in the cross country league. And this will set us up for an even bigger and better 2011.

The Sportshall League, a juniors-only competition which takes place at Dawlish in a series of meetings from October to March, provides good winter competition in dry and warm conditions, particularly for those new to athletics. Cross Country is contested in the Westward League and this is suitable for all age groups from under 11 upwards. The season for this also kicks off in October. Details of all this competition can also be found through the club website — http://www.tavistockathletics.com">www.tavistockathletics.com

The construction of the new athletics facilities at Tavistock College has certainly brought about a new impetus for the club and winning the Devon Open has provided ample reward for all of the hard work put in by all concerned.

Tavistock Athletic Club welcomes new members although they currently have a waiting list for junior membership. They would also be delighted to hear from coaches or anyone who is interested in getting involved.
