FOURTEEN members of the Tavistock Company of Archers this month were on target during their bi-annual visit to Pontivy in France. This was the 10th anniversary of the twinning and turned out to be the best one yet. Having caught the ferry to Roscoff on the Friday morning and then a two hour drive down through the scenic French countryside Tavistock members were met in the main square in Pontivy by their hosts and taken to the old castle in the high street for a reception by the Mayor and members of his office. Club president Jean Yves Boscher said it was nice to see so many friends and archers arrive once again to do battle. Chairman Mike Charlesworth said it was good to be back in Pontivy and looked forward to a good weekend. After enjoying some refreshing local hospitality the archers went with their host before meeting up again for a session of ten pin bowling which went on into the early hours. The highlight of the evening was the accidental ?destruction? by a senior member of the club who tried to bowl two balls at once bringing the lane to a shutdown. Saturday was the day of competition and Tavistock having won for the previous three years sportingly felt it was time that the French gained revenge to win back the James Trophy ? or so they claim! The weather was hot and sunny and it was a slow start to the morning?s shooting. Chairman Mike Charlesworth presented president Jean Yves Boscher with a marble plaque to commemorate the 10 years of the twinning. After the first session Tavistock realised that they had their work cut out. In true Gallic style the lunch break lasted two hours and by this time all the archers were refreshed and shooting much better. At the end of the day?s shooting the scores were added up and Pontivy had gained revenge on Tavistock. However there was satisfaction for the archers of Tavistock as many of the members had won their individual classes. The winners included Robin Booth, Gillian Garlick, Anita Bales, Peter Bales, Sandi Cackett, and Lez James. On the Sunday the French hosts took their West Devon guests out for the day to visit an old abbey, picnic and shopping at a local market. Lez James, a spokesman for the Tavistock Company of Archers, said: ?A good weekend was had by all and at the banquet chairman Mike Charlesworth gave a speech thanking the archers of Pontivy for their hospitality. He welcomed the weekend and reminisced about the last ten years and how both clubs had become very close and many friends had been made.? Mike presented engraved wine glasses to two members of the original six who had come on the first twinning in 1998, Yveline Marquar and Benoit Ruelland, and a photo album of the visits past. In return president Jean Yves Boscher said it was good that both clubs were here and that he looked forward to 2008 where the archers of Tavistock might be able to get their revenge. He then presented all the Tavistock archers with an engraved glass to celebrate the occasion.
