THERE?S an opportunity to stimulate the grey matter and raise money for a good cause in Lewtrenchard this week, with a wine and wisdom evening. The event, in Lewdown?s Victory Hall, is being held to raise money for the village pre-school group, which has recently suffered a substantial dip in numbers. Pre-school chairman Mandy Kenyon said the group had lost more than 50% of the children in January, as seven of them had moved up to primary school. And despite a number of houses being built in the Lewdown area, there was still a shortage of three to five year olds for the pre-school. Mandy said: ?On Monday, just three children attend the pre-school, with up to eight attending on other days. ?The committee was prepared for this natural dip in numbers and subsequent reduction in funding. ?We have decided to maintain our Monday session through various fundraising efforts ? if we had reduced the number of sessions they could have been lost forever, although one positive aspect of the dip in numbers is the high child to staff ratio.? The wine and wisdom event, being held tomorrow (Friday), is the first of a serious of fundraisers being organised by the pre-school committee. Mandy said: ?We are fortunate that our local community is very supportive of the pre-school ? many people turn out two or three times a year to fundraising events and they always bring a raffle prize and have a good time.?
