A SERIES of action days spanning the whole of Dartmoor were recently carried out by West Devon police.
The action days by Crime Reduction team of South Hams and West Devon police led to numerous drivers being stopped for speeding and many visitors and residents being given up-to-date crime prevention materials.
One couple visiting the moors was thankful when crime reduction officer Mike Youlden pointed out that the bag and coat they were about to leave on display in their car while heading off for a leisurely walk were attractive targets for a 'would-be-thief', potentially causing hundreds of pounds of damage, as well as added misery and inconvenience.
The MoorWatch operation is part of crime reduction manager John Livingstone's drive to wipe out crime on the moors.
He said: 'Historically, crime on Dartmoor has included theft of farm machinery and animals, burglary, fly tipping, speeding and theft from sheds and outbuildings.
'Giving safety and practical security information to local people and residents is part of our crime reduction and prevention plan.
'We urge all visitors and residents to Dartmoor to leave nothing to chance, lock everything up and leave nothing on display. Things like loose change, bags, computer equipment and Sat Navs are all enticing targets for the thief looking for an easy scoop.'
The police urge anyone noticing anything suspicious to report it to their local neighbourhood team.
Sgt Livingstone added: 'It's our intention to retain South Hams and West Devon's envied reputation as being one of the safest counties to live.'
MoorWatch was carried out in partnership with neighbourhood policing teams, local authority and staff from Dartmoor National Park Authority.
Further MoorWatch days are planned.
