Westinsure Cornwall Senior cup
Callington Town 0
Perranporth 0
(after extra time)
THIS entertaining and well contested quarter final will have to go to a replay at Perranporth next Saturday after Callington and the visitors put on a spectacle that belied the difficult conditions underneath at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday.
The recent wet weather took its toll on the normally excellent surface and the heavy going could have destroyed the game, but to the credit of both sides they produced some excellent football.
The opening 25 minutes was all the home side but they failed to press their advantage in front of goal and this almost came back to haunt them on the stroke of half time when Brian Hawke saw his shot saved at the second attempt by Town keeper Dan Johnson after good approach work by Lee Dark.
Just after the restart Hawke was denied again, this time by the outstanding Lee Beer in the Callington defence while at the other end, Gareth Jones was denied by the Perran keeper Andy Butcher.
With 15 minutes to go, Perranporth wasted arguably the chance of the game when, with just the goalkeeper to beat, Rob Stapleton headed wide. This was almost punished in devastating style on the stroke of full time when Ryan Lucassi saw his shot somehow saved by Butcher.
Both sides had chances in extra time, with the best coming for the home side when Dan Jefferis saw his header cleared off the line and the ball came back to Paul McAdam whose header just cleared the bar.
So both sides will clash again next week with a first ever semi final appearance the tantalising prize for both sides.
Man of the match was Lee Beer for Callington Town.
Callington: Johnson, Wyatt, Holt, Small, Jefferis, Beer, Green, Jones, Yates, R McClements, Lucassi, McAdam, Pook, J McClements .
