LAST Wednesday the 1254 train from Plymouth to Gunnislake was terminated on its arrival at Bere Ferrers due to lack of power.

A dozen travellers and the conductor guard were left stranded in the hot sunshine as the train departed slowly back to Plymouth.

Two volunteers, Bill and Steve at the Tamar Belle visitor complex, swung into action and opened the buffet. They served hot and cold drinks and provided rest and shelter for the travellers while the very competent conductor arranged alternative transport.

I was at the station at the time and must commend the rail staff and the Tamar Belle staff for the expert way that the travellers were looked after.

Apart from one traveller who protested about the inadequacies of the railway and quickly went away in a taxi all the travellers took their transport delay with good heart and most showed great interest in the Tamar Belle.

Well done, everyone, and as an aside it's worth a visit to Bere Ferrers Station.
