THE experience of a lifetime is on offer to young people in the Tavistock area this summer as they take part in a free channel trip on a tall ship.

The Getaway Project 2003 is being run by Devon Youth Service, and Tavistock College?s youth office has again been successful in securing places.

John Collacott, director of youth education, said: ?We did the original pilot for the Gateway Project four years ago and each year we have done extended outdoor education.

?This year I thought it would be nice to do something a bit different and we?ve actually managed to get funding to do the tall ships trip.?

The trip is open to young people in the Year 11 age group within the Tavistock College catchment area ? 16-year-olds who are not in education in this area are also invited to apply.

Ten places are available on the trip ? they will be accompanied by three members of staff and two youth leaders.

Mr Collacott said: ?Tall ship sailing involves cruising on traditional sailing vessels, learning to sail, visiting different harbours and anchorages and having time to explore ashore and meet people.?

He said the trip departs Brixham on August 9 and will either head south towards the Channel Islands and Brittany or west along the coast to Cornwall, depending on wind and weather conditions. The trip returns to Brixham on August 15.

Planning and guidance sessions will be held during June and July for parents and participants ? there will also be a post-expedition evaluation meeting.

The young people will also be given the opportunity to gain youth achievement awards.

Mr Collacott said: ?The principle aim of the project is to make a

successful transition at 16 years of age into further education, training or work by means of challenging activities, combined with guidance, support and accreditation.?

The scheme has been funded by the New Opportunities Fund.

Any young person who wishes to apply for one of the ten free places on the tall ships trip should call John Collacott on 01822 613522 as soon as possible.
