A SERVICE providing local news to visually impaired people in West Devon has launched a website, which will go live next month.
The Plymouth and West Devon Talking Newspaper has been delivering a free weekly broadcast featuring local news and interesting articles from national magazines to visually impaired people for over 40 years. Initially, this was sent out on tapes then, in 2009, CDs were added to the mix. Memory sticks were introduced in 2014 but now the charity has moved into the 21st century by creating a website.
From Monday, August 6, the weekly broadcasts will be available on the website www.plymouth-westdevontalkingnewspaper.org
The memory stick will still be used by the majority of listeners but the forward-thinking organisation hopes that by utilising what technology is available, it will be able to attract younger, visually impaired people.
In order to access this service, it is necessary to register through the website and confirm that the person using the facility is visually impaired.
The Plymouth and West Devon Talking Newspaper is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers.
