THE humanitarian crisis facing the people of Iraq will be highlighted at a talk in Tavistock, next Tuesday, (July 2).

The speaker, Joanne Baker, has visited Iraq several times, most recently in April as part of an international delegation.

Joanne, who has given two previous talks in Tavistock, will look at the problems caused by almost 12 years of economic sanctions against the country. She believes these sanctions have ruined the nation's infrastructure and Iraq now owes more debt than any other country in the world.

The widespread suffering caused by depleted uranium, remaining from weapons used against Iraqi soldiers during the Gulf War and the lack of facilities in the country's hospitals, will also be described.

Joanne will show how these problems affect the future of Iraq's environment and its economy. She will also consider the implications of the possible military action proposed by President Bush.

The talk, 'What Future for Iraq?' begins at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Chapel Street, Tavistock. The talk has been arranged by Tavistock Peace Action Group.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
