DEVON Firefighters are inviting the  people of Tavistock to enjoy the great outdoors in May by taking part in this years' Dartmoor Cycle Challenge, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

The 25-mile route starts from Coy Pool Park and Ride Car Park in Plympton and follows the Plym Cycle Way up to Yelverton, through Burrator, loops the reservoir and returns to Coy Pool at the cyclists' leisure.

For those who want to challenge themselves further, the 50-mile route continues from Burrator Reservoir over Peek Hill and across to Princetown and back.

Jon Miller and his  team of firefighters are made up of ten full and part-time firefighters based and living in Devon.

The team supports Cancer Research UK following their own traumas at the hands of the disease as they lost a colleague and fellow cyclist to cancer in 2005, as well as suffering the effects of other cancer related illnesses to close family and friends.

Events co-ordinator Jon Miller said: 'The team are very dedicated and hope to raise as much money as possible to help in fighting cancer, and what better way than to get some fresh air and enjoy the beautiful scenery of  Dartmoor and its surroundings.

'We have nothing but good comments during and after the event, there is a real buzz and people enjoy it tremendously, so we are hoping that lots of people will sign up again this year and  help us make it a great success.

'Money raised from this event will help fund vital research and clinical trials taking place locally which ultimately helps all cancer patients, wherever they live.'

Sylvia Arlett, area manager for Cancer Research UK, said: 'I am delighted that our wonderful firefighters are organising this event again,  it is popular and people of all ages take part.

'The route is interesting, very picturesque and there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments and take in the scenery, including the lovely Dartmoor ponies.

'Much of the course is off-road or on safer roads so it really does appeal to both novice and experienced cyclists.

'Entry this year is £10 for adults and children under 16 free of charge as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

'We are asking people to raise some sponsorship too.

'If anyone can help us promote the event by placing a few posters in their community, that too would be very welcome.'

The Dartmoor Cycle Challenge will take place on Sunday May 22 at 10am.
