WITH the eighth Tavistock Town Relay fast approaching it is time to get a team together and give the relay a go! The event is being held on July 19 in The Meadows beginning at 6.30pm. The relay forms part of the Tavistock Carnival celebrations, and is organised by Tavistock Athletic Club with sponsorship from Abbey Garden Machinery. All profits from the event are given to the carnival charities. Last year there were 63 teams competing from running clubs, other sports clubs, businesses and schools. The runners and their supporters enjoyed an evening out beside the Tavy and a barbeque laid on by the Lions Club. Organisers are looking for local organisations and clubs to get a team together and there are a number of prizes to compete for! Junior teams can win trophies for male and female teams at under 12, U14 and U16 levels. Entry forms can be downloaded from http://www.tavistockathletics">www.tavistockathletics or picked up on the evening from the event centre at Meadowlands Pool in Tavistock from 5.30pm. The fun run starts at 6.30pm. It is open to all and is more than a single 1.1 mile lap. Medals will be given to all finishers. The junior relay will start about 6.45pm and the senior event about 7.15pm. Each of the four team members will run a circuit through the Meadows along either side of the Tavy, starting beside Meadowlands and the Brooks tent, crossing at Abbey Bridge and Westbridge. The runners are in view most of the time so team members and spectators can cheer their friends on around the course! The senior event attracts entries from running clubs from across Devon and East Cornwall. Last year Tavistock AC won the senior men?s event in a record time of 20.46 mins, whilst the women?s relay was won by East Cornwall Harriers in 25.08mins, also a record for the course. Sports clubs winners were Tavistock Rugby Club and Tavistock Hockey Club. Local business winners were Capita Business Systems. l Pictured are Tavistock AC chairman Alan Herdman who thanks Steve John of Abbey Garden Machinery for their sponsorship
