A UNIVERSITY study recently published suggests that brisk walking reduces the risk of heart disease more effectively than running — and there is an opportunity to take part in some walks with Tavistock Ramblers next month.
Study leader Dr Paul Williams said: 'We know the best type of activity for your heart is that which is aerobic and of moderate intensity. Walking helps you control your weight, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol and improve your mental health.'
The report coincides with the publication by Tavistock Ramblers of their summer walks programme which starts off with Get Walking Week.
Get Walking Week is an annual springtime event across the whole of the UK where people have the opportunity to join a fairly short walk in their area and led by an experienced walk leader.
The walks are free to join and Tavistock Ramblers have four walks of six miles or less between May 4 and 16. Other Ramblers groups in the area are also taking part so there is a shortish walk to suit everybody in early May.
This is a good opportunity to take steps towards an active and healthy summer in friendly company.
