CHAGFORD'S 'Proper Job' recycling and reuse centre is holding an open day on Bank Holiday Monday for regular customers and first-time visitors alike to view their newly improved facilities. The community recycling centre has refurbished its furniture, book, and clothes shops and has also opened a new green shop. Seth Kirton who co-manages the co-operative, said: ' The green shop is going to sell all kinds of green stuff for the home — floor cleaner, biodegradable bin bags, low-energy lightbulbs, and green nappies that can be composted. We'll stock lots of things under one roof that you can't really buy anywhere else in the area.' Visitors to the site on Bank Holiday Monday will be offered tours of the centre. 'They'll be able to see our commercial composting as it happens,' Seth said. Proper Job was started in 1992 as Chagford Community Composting Project by volunteers concerned at the amount of garden material sent to landfill sites from the local allotments. It has since grown to become a not-for-profit co-operative business employing many local people. The project  has eco-designed and constructed buildings, including a straw bale barn and a timber-framed office building with turf roof,  'thermafleece' sheeps-wool insulation, and a dry composting toilet. Its foremost objective is to increase public awareness of the need to conserve resources and reduce waste. For more information about the centre or the open day, call Seth on 01647 432985.
