SIX members of Tavistock Athletic Club went off to sunny Spain and Torremolinos to compete for the club.
The team performed superbly with three of them returning with silver gilt trophies.
The prestigious race was reduced from the original half marathon of 13.1 miles to 11.8 kilometres and classed it as a 'quarter marathon'.
The race began in the beautiful old quarter of Torremolinos town before continuing down through some of the narrow worn cobblestone streets toward the seafront promenade of exquisite cafes and restaurants at the 4km mark. It was here that TAC's new Dutch athlete Arsen Mone, competing in his first ever race for the club, had to pull out with a groin muscle strain.
The race then went into the foothills where Antonio Simonez led the Tavistock pack and heading for first place in the M50 category beating the second M50 by more than a minute. Following Antonio was Steve Mullett running in the M55 age group, rewarded with a well deserved first place. Next in for the club was Dr Lloyd Charles who suffered a severe stomach complaint in the last few days before travelling and therefore had to be cautious during the race itself. Penultimate finisher for TAC was Chris Eastaugh.
It was a highly commendable performance made special by pacing fellow athlete Rebecca Exley for the first few kilometres. As a pair they had performed well together and Rebecca was the final Tavistock athlete to cross the line, and finishing second in the F35 category.
Tavistock athletes have now competed consecutively in this race for the last five years with Chris Eastaugh and Dr Lloyd Charles competing in all five.
The race and trophy presentations lunch was an extremely pleasant affair held al-fresco in the spring sunshine.
The club thanked the organisers for a well planned event and the accommodation provider for the hospitality.
