A MATURE sycamore tree in Tavistock's Meadows is to be felled 'as a matter of urgency'.
Town councillors at their meeting on Tuesday agreed with works superintendent Les Bennett that the tree, opposite Harewood House in Plymouth Road, would have to come down.
Mr Bennett said: 'It has been worked on in the last 20 years — it will make an awfully big gap, but we will do a block planting in the autumn which will fill in.
'I'm afraid it's got to go.'
Mr Bennett confirmed there was no preservation order on the tree.
Cllr Peter Donkin asked if a smaller replacement tree could be planted as he felt many mature trees in the town were too large for their location.
