COMMONWEALTH games swimming medallist Adrian Turner was the special guest at the official re-opening of Meadowlands Pool in Tavistock last week, following a £60,000 investment at the leisure centre.
Adrian then stayed at the pool to give a swimming lesson to local children who attend the Meadowlands Swimming Club and Harpers SwimSchool.
The joint investment by West Devon Borough Council and Leisure Connection/Harpers Fitness in the leisure pool's facilities include new measures to make the centre more energy efficient.
All the boilers in the centre have been replaced with more energy efficient models to help reduce the centre's carbon emissions.
The changing rooms have been refurbished and all the lockers and changing cubicles have been replaced. The communal areas have had a face lift and ceiling and doors have been replaced.
The plant room at the centre has also been refurbished and a new low energy lighting system has been installed to make the tropical paradise more energy efficient.
David Dennis, the manager of Meadowlands, said: 'I am delighted with the changes to the leisure pool and I'm pleased that the re-launch of the centre on Tuesday went so well.
'Swimming is a fantastic way to keep fit and I hope local people and their children will visit the centre to see how they can get fit in the water.
'We fully support the Government's free swimming initiative and from April 2009, free swimming for the over 60s will be available at Meadowlands.'
Cllr Terry Pearce, mayor of West Devon said: 'Meadowlands Leisure Pool is enjoyed by many people in the community.
'We are delighted with the result of the refurbishment and very pleased that the pool is now open again for everyone to use.
'The launch went very well and I am pleased that Adrian was able to attend and lend his support to the centre.'
