SWIMMERS in Okehampton made a big splash for charity in April as they completed the Swimathon 2011 challenge at Parklands Leisure Centre and helped raise £2,270 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.

Parklands Leisure Centre was one of more than 580 pools which took part nationwide in the Swimathon this year.

With seven swimmers visiting Parklands Leisure Centre, swimmers of all ages, shapes and abilities were able to make their splash count for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Organiser Lesley Muir, business manager at Parklands Leisure Centre for Leisure Connection, said: 'We're thrilled to have been able to help Marie Curie Cancer Care again this year. Parklands Leisure Centre managed to raise £2270.  The Marie Curie Swimathon was such an important event for the local community and it was touching to see how many swimmers arrived, if not to swim, but to show their support for such a worthy cause.'
