SWIMMERS from West Devon were among the 31,238 people across the country splashing out for leading cancer care charity Macmillan Cancer Relief, by taking part in this year's Swimathon.
Special Swimathon events took place last month at Meadowlands and Kelly College pools in Tavistock and the Okehampton swimming pool in Simmons Park.
Those who took part in Swimathon helped the charity to smash the £2-million barrier nationwide — money which will make a real difference to people living with cancer in Devon.
Macmillan Cancer Relief will receive 85 per cent of the money raised.
The charity funds specialist Macmillan nurses and doctors, buildings for cancer treatment and care, and grants for patients in financial difficulties.
The remaining funds are distributed to smaller localized charities by the newly-established Swimathon Foundation, which gives swimmers a more direct involvement in the way their sponsorship money is spent.
The organisers are reminding those who have not yet sent in their sponsorship money, to get collecting and send a cheque to: Swimathon 2002, PO Box 30775, London, WC1B 4QE.
Those who get their money in before May 31 can even claim a Swimathon 2002 incentive.
