KELLY College Swimming pool is not just for Olympic greats, but also for everyone in the community, from all walks of life. Recently nine swimmers took part in a challenge to achieve the greatest possible distance within one hour. It is an annual event held by the British Long Distance Swimming Association. The swim is broken down into age group categories ranging from Under 9s to 80 years plus. Brian Wilson came eighth in the 55-59 year category, also achieving a first place gold medal in the H1 disability grouping. Ella Ellis, the youngest entrant, just five years old, swam a tremendous 1150 metres (46 lengths), being placed 195th in the Under 9s, while Mary Phillpots came sixth in the 75-79 years category. This proves swimming is brilliant whatever your age or ability. Other entrants included Clare Short, 17th, and Alison Morris, 18th ( 35-39 years); Corry Grice, 12th and Roslynn Williams, 14th (50-54 years), Margaret Gregory, 14th and Jennifer Brooker, 16th (55-59 years). The person who swam the furthest was from Birmingham aged 25. She swam a staggering 5025 metres (201 lengths). Now that?s a challenge for next year!
