HATHERLEIGH Silver Band returned victorious from the recent South West Brass Band Championships in Torquay after winning third prize.
For the last 18 months, the silverware seemed to have eluded the band so winning third place from a line-up of 16 bands and finishing two points behind the national champions was particularly pleasing for the members.
Although four players short, the band gave an excellent rendition of the test piece 'Passing Moods' and brought home the Brookholdings Dawe Shield from the championships.
Much credit was given to Robin Wonnacott for his skills and enthusiasm in preparing the band.
Band members said the new sweatshirts they wore at the event must have been a good omen.
Remembrance Day produced a unique experience for the band when four of the players played the Last Post and Reveille at different churches — Peter Cripps played at Hatherleigh, Daniel Adams at Petrockstowe, Karen Squire at Chagford and Mark Quick at North Tawton.
During the next few weeks leading up to Christmas the band are playing at numerous concerts in the area.
