LAST weekend three members of the Tavistock Triathlon Club travelled to the New Forest to compete in an early season Half Ironman Event called the Swashbuckler.

The race consisted of a 1.9km swim in the river Beaulieu starting at a chilly 5.15 am followed by a 50 mile cycle around the picturesque villages and finishing with a 14 mile run.

Nicky Deane Simmons finished in 5 hours 57 mins with a superb run section, Clare Short finished in 6hrs 05min having the fastest cycle section of the group, and Mike Gunnell finished in 6hrs 47 mins just delighted at still being alive! This was a training race in preparation for the full Ironman in Austria in seven weeks time.

The three athletes have been in training for the last 30 weeks and have six further weeks of hard training ahead of them. Liz Vernon also from Tavistock Triathlon Club is also training for the Austria Triathlon.
