A STUDENT from Callington lied to the police and altered the appearance of his car in a bid to avoid a hefty speeding fine, a court has been told. Sebastian Wensley, aged 22, narrowly escaped a prison sentence after he admitted driving at almost 100mph in a 70mph limit ? and then trying to trick police into thinking it wasn?t his car. Mr Wensley was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for a year, at Plymouth Crown Court last week, after he pleaded guilty to one charge of perverting the course of justice. He was also disqualified from driving for three months, ordered to pay £700 towards the prosecution?s costs and told to carry out 120 hours unpaid work in the community. Mr Wensley, a second-year information technology degree student at Plymouth University, was caught by a speed camera at 1.59pm on January 4 this year in his Ford Fiesta doing 97mph in a 70mph limit on the A30 at Indian Queens in Cornwall. Police corresponded with him over the following few months ? but he consistently maintained the car the camera had photographed was not his. He claimed his vehicle had a number of key differences to the one in the picture ? including having two white stripes over the bonnet and roof, a differently-shaped tax disc holder and a different number plate. Mr Wensley claimed someone must have been using his registration number. The court heard officers found that the car was his and that he had put the white stripes on himself after the offence and made other alterations to make it look different in an attempt to escape a fine and a driving ban.
