A GROUP that has carried out a survey into the needs for a new supermarket in Okehampton has handed in its results to West Devon Borough Council.
Okehampton Community First, an off-shoot of the town's chamber of trade, was set up to highlight the plight of independent traders in the town, and promote shopping in the town centre.
The group has carried out a survey, asking residents of Okehampton on their thoughts as to whether the town needs a new supermarket, and their other shopping habits and requirements.
The survey results show that the majority of people who responded were against another large supermarket in the town.
Cllr Jan Goffey, the town council's representative for the chamber of trade, handed in the results to the borough council on Wednesday November 7. The council can now look at the group's work and their findings.
Jan Goffey said: 'Looking at the results, the number of people who openly admit they don't shop in the town centre is astonishing. People should support the community they live in, and that is what Okehampton Community First is trying to promote.'
