THE RESULT of the planning inquiry into the Sainsbury's supermarket proposal for Tavistock will be announced the first week in June.

Planning Inspector Andrew Pykett spent five and a half days listening to all parties present their cases for and against the proposal at the Bedford Hotel.

West Devon Borough Council refused the application for an out-of-town supermarket on a 3.8 hectare site at Brook Farm at the end of last year. The proposal includes 17 business units, an office block, petrol station and 350 car parking spaces.

The Dowager Duchess of Bedford has joined the campaign against the development. In a letter to a Yelverton resident who opposes the supermarket plan, she said: 'Tavistock is one of the nicest, most unspoiled market towns in England, retaining the feel that so many places used to have - why spoil a beautiful town?'

Sainsbury's said it would claw back shoppers to Tavistock who currently travelled to other towns to do their food shopping.
