Devon cup semi-final Okehampton U16 16 Exmouth U16 12 THIS could be the finest Okehampton junior side to reach a Devon cup final. Quite an achievement as all the players have only played club rugby for Okehampton. Exmouth won the toss and opted to play up the slope and into the strong wind, so Okehampton had to put points on in this half. Okehampton started well with the forwards driving Exmouth back, and they soon started to concede penalties just outside the 22. Carl Poynton kicked two out of three shots in the first ten minutes. Exmouth then settled and the forward battle began, with Scott Simpson leading the way. Exmouth got into the Okehampton half, but the ball got turned over and fly-half Poynton used the wind fittingly and kicked to touch well into the Exmouth half. From a dropped pass Okehampton centre Carl Goodall scooped up a loose ball and sprinted in to score from inside his own half just before half-time to make it 13-0. Exmouth got a flying start to the second half when their forwards drove over to score after Okehampton gave away too many penalties. When Exmouth tried to move the ball wide centre Rory Honeychurch and full-back Jake Chisholme tackled superbly and forced handling errors; but eventually Exmouth did score and converted to trail by one point. This fired Okehampton up and the pack drove into the Exmouth 22 and had a good spell camped on the Exmouth five metre line and after several penalties and quick taps they opted for Poynton to kick the three points. Exmouth attacked again in the last few minutes but ran out of time.
