EDF Energy Senior Vase Truro 3 Tavistock 27 TAVISTOCK travelled to Truro on Saturday and scored a resounding victory against higher league opposition in the second round of the EDF Energy Senior Vase. Truro started well during the early exchanges and put Tavistock under pressure but the Tavistock centre field defence of Duncan Law and Daniel Evans stopped their opponents in their tracks. Gradually Tavistock began to assert themselves and with the scrum dominant were able to starve Truro of the ball and provide opportunities for Tavistock to exploit. Tavistock took the lead at the end of the first quarter when fly half Doug Lloyd broke left from a scrum, chipped the defence, gathered his own kick and fed Duncan Law, who in turn found winger Matt Trevithick in support for a score in the corner. Truro hit back and after Tavistock were penalised at the breakdown slotted the resultant penalty goal to reduce the Tavistock lead. Tavistock extended their lead before half time when after moving the ball left via Josh Sutton and Matt Trevithick they won quick possession from a ruck and spun the ball right through to Doug Lloyd and Duncan Law for Will Brown to score wide out on the right. Tavistock dominated the second half and after winning a lineout close to the Truro line employed the catch and drive to good effect allowing scrum half Lee Greatrex to scamper over in the corner. Further pressure saw Doug Lloyd make a midfield break and Matt Trevithick took the scoring pass. Matt had to work hard for the try, breaking a number of tackles in his progress to the line. Late in the game Tavistock replaced one teenage winger, Simon Braithwaite, with another, David Goodspeed, and former Truro second row Mark Davey was replaced by first team debutant Steve Long. Unfortunately Steve?s game ended abruptly when he was yellow carded soon after for a professional foul. Tavistock ended the game on a high when from another lineout catch and drive Will Brown grabbed his second try of the afternoon. Josh Sutton converted. This coming Saturday Tavistock entertain Cullompton in the Cornwall and Devon league. Kick off 2:30pm.
