YELVERTON Tennis Club players were blessed with a sunny day for their spring opener tournament, the weather a complete contrast to the previous Saturday's weather, causing the original postponement. Thanks were expressed to all 18 people who entered. The participants played three group stages in different pools in each round, more than three hours' play during the afternoon, leading to the two highest placed in each group going in to the grand final. Congratulations go to Wendy Sharland, Jenny Kay, Charles Hattersley and Tom Alway (pictured) on reaching the final. Tom supersubbed for Ollie Amann who played brilliantly in the earlier stages, but who had to leave slightly early. Tom stepped in and kept the momentum going, to reach the final, Tom and Ollie being two of Yelverton's excellent juniors. Wendy partnered Tom against Jenny and Charles, the latter pair getting off to a fast start. But Wendy and Tom came back and it all came down to the deciding game. It looked odds on to be going to a sudden death juice, when Wendy and Tom just edged a match point to take the final. The winners of the Yelverton Ladies' Winter League were also announced as Helen Smith and Wendy Sharland. They well deserved the win and the games throughout the winter had been enjoyable. Thanks were given to Ann Short for her organisation of the competition. The Yelverton club is always pleased to see new members, whatever their standard. Any ladies wishing to play league tennis in the three teams are also welcome. Contact the membership secretary on 01822 855583.
