PLOUGH Sunday was celebrated at St Andrew's Church in Sampford Courtenay last Sunday, when members of local young farmers' clubs pushed the vintage horse plough up the aisle to the chancel, together with a sack of wheat seed and a sample of soil, for a traditional blessing by the Rev Nick Weldon.
The choir sang the Harvest anthem 'Thou visitest the earth' by Dr Greene.
At the end of the service, and in glorious sunshine, the congregation, led by the choir, processed to The Square singing 'We plough the fields and scatter' and the service concluded with the blessing of the tractors and ploughs parked there.
They were Ed Lowe's 1940s grey Ferguson with a two-furrow plough, David Weeks' Fendt with a five-furrow plough, Justin Dunn's Massey Ferguson with a five-furrow plough and Gary Stoneman's John Deere with a six-furrow plough.
