As the season has drawn to an end in Tamar Cricket League, Wombat Sports Saturday Section chairman Mike Pike comments on how the season has gone.

IT HAS been a very successful season for the league in many ways.

For the first time in many seasons the weather has been good with only five games out of 90 being lost to rain. It has also been a trouble free picture on the administration front, but where it really matters, on the pitch, fresh names have risen to the top.

The champions are Calstock who have not featured for many seasons in the hunt for the league title. They have been very consistent all season only losing the once, and are worthy champions.

Runners-up, and by far their best ever finish, are Milton Abbot. After a good start it looked as if a mid-season down turn had put them out of the running, but a very strong finish was enough for runner up a just reward for a club who have stuck to it all through the league.

Of the rest, Yelverton, who were in the mix most of the season had to settle for third place; forth were Buckland always a threat but will be disappointed that inconsistency let them down.

Lifton had a poor start to the season with key players missing, but were always capable of producing surprise results. Next were St Stephens who had a 'nearly' season with results of three last over games going against them.

Tavistock also suffered from inconsistency and will be disappointed with their finish.

Werrington were also a team who made a good start but were unable to keep it going.

Lewdown must take great credit for their efforts through the season, being a young side and often suffering from first and second team call ups. They kept at it and were fast improving.

Also Launceston who after having the sort of season no one wants losing 17 straight games saved the best to last by winning their final game to end on a high.
