A BIG thank you was this week issued to everyone in the Tavistock area who responded to a recent appeal for wool in the Times, made by the Operation Sunshine organisation. Dedicated knitting volunteers who make clothes for poor children in Africa have been delighted with the donations. Linda Downing, who helps Operation Sunshine and collects and distributes the wool, said: 'We've had bags of the most beautiful wool you have ever seen — my knitters are just delighted! 'The sound you are hearing in this area this spring isn't cuckoos, it's the clicking of needles — this wool is giving the knitters so much pleasure!' Linda said in the 20 years she has been helping out the Operation Sunshine charity, the knitting volunteers have made 16,000 jumpers for children in Africa. 'We are so lucky that we can do this. In lots of areas they don't have an organisation like Operation Sunshine. Instead of sitting watching the news and thinking "How awful", people are able to do something really positive to help,' said Linda, who also thanked the staff at Tavistock Library, who provide a collection point for the wool. More donations of wool are always welcomed by the Operation Sunshine volunteer knitters — simply take any spare balls to the library in Plymouth Road.
