TAVISTOCK Golf Club's annual presentation evening was, as usual, well supported by members when more than 40 prize winners collected their trophies for the 2008 season.

Proving that golf can be a family affair for all ages were the Greenings, who enjoyed an excellent season between them.  Marjorie Greening, a past lady captain, won the Winter Matchplay Trophy, while her son Alan collected the Artisans' Cup. Not to be outdone, granddaughter Emma won the President's junior prize.

The men's annual Bottle Trot produced close scores in the first division with Kevin Northcote winning with 35 points on countback from George Gawman, Steve Thackham and Robert Lovell.

In division two first was Max Clarke with 36pts, second Paul Reid on 35 pts and third Alan Greening with 34.  The third division also produced countbacks on 34pts with Richard Rowe winning from Keith Stenhouse and Alan Roach.

In the men's Poultry Medal Mike Wakeley had a remarkable four twos in his round!  This, the club thinks, is a first time ever event and an incredible achievement.

In division one first was Graham Dennis with a nett 67, second Adam Waddle nett 69, third Mike Wakely with nett 70 on countback from Tom Dodd.  In division two first was Brian Williams with a nett 73 on countback from John Lyddon and Shaun Getson.  In division three the winner was Dan Pratley nett 68, second Richard Burrows nett 72 on countback from John Harris.

The ladies held a successful morning for new lady members.  It provided an opportunity for them to meet and play with members and arrange games.  The ladies were not so lucky with their Poultry Medal. Because of the atrocious weather winners were drawn — the last time this happened was during the Foot and Mouth crisis.

Unfortunately the weather also affected the juniors last competition of the year and their game was cancelled.  Ross Bryant will be taking over as captain from Chris Gawman with Sam Brockington as his vice-Captain.

In 2009 past Devon captain, Rob Brockington, will be junior organiser taking over from Bev Ruth.  Club captain, Tim Hawkins, paid tribute to Bev and all those who gave their time to help with the juniors and wished them every success in 2009 when they will be back in the Devon Junior League.  He then joined them in their annual Christmas dinner — an event not affected by the weather!

Norma Thewlis, who is standing down as the club's lady captain, said: 'With the last matches of 2008 having been played this concludes a successful year for Tavistock Golf Club.  Among the highlights of the year was the highly successful Open Day held in September.  More than 147 golfers and non-golfers took advantage of the joining offer and became members.

'Another major highlight was the winning of the Dartmoor Pony Trophy  for the first time in 13 years —  the winning team were all husband and wives pairings! Now the social season has started with a very successful candlelight supper, a murder mystery evening and the annual carol singing evening — always a very enjoyable evening.

'Christmas dinners will be starting shortly and the ever popular New Year's Eve ball is a sell out as is Burns Night followed in February by the St Valentine's dinner. Life is never dull at Tavistock Golf Club!'
